If you’re planning a one-day Shantiniketan tour, this guide walks you through everything you need to know—from reaching Bolpur to exploring key landmarks, timings, entry fees, and travel tips.

Reaching Shantiniketan from Kolkata

I started my journey early in the morning by boarding the Ganadevta Express from Howrah Station at 6:05 AM on a Saturday. The train was scheduled to reach Bolpur Shantiniketan at 8:30 AM, but arrived slightly late at 9:00 AM.

There are several trains available daily from Howrah, Sealdah, and Kolkata stations to Bolpur, making day trips quite convenient. Other commonly used trains include Shantiniketan Express and Kaviguru Express.

Local Transport: Exploring by Toto

Upon arriving at Bolpur station, I found many local toto drivers offering full-day tours. After some negotiation, I settled on a day-long ride for ₹800, down from an initial quote of ₹1200. This turned out to be an efficient way to cover all the major attractions within a day.

Itinerary: Places Covered in One Day

1. Poush Mela Ground

Our first stop was the open fairground where the Poush Mela is held every December. Though quiet off-season, it offers a glimpse into the cultural vibrancy of Shantiniketan.

2. Visva-Bharati University

We then entered the Visva-Bharati campus, originally established by Tagore. Key sites within the campus include:

Upasana Griha – A marble and glass prayer hall used for meditation.
Chhatimtala – The sacred spot where Maharshi Debendranath Tagore meditated.
Kala Bhavan – The fine arts faculty, featuring murals and open-air sculptures.
Sangeet Bhavan – Known for classical music and dance education.
China Bhavan, Cheena Bhavan, and Tala Dhwaja – Institutions symbolising international collaboration in Tagore’s time.

3. Amartya Sen’s Ancestral House

We made a brief stop outside the residence of Amartya Sen, the Nobel laureate in Economics, who grew up in Shantiniketan.

4. Basanta Utsav Ground

This is the site of Shantiniketan’s celebrated spring festival or Holi. While it’s quiet most of the year, it’s central to understanding the cultural life here.

5. Rabindra Bhavan (Tagore Museum)

One of the most significant places on the itinerary. Entry costs ₹100, and the museum is open from 10:00 AM, but remains closed on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and public holidays. It houses manuscripts, personal belongings, and letters written by Tagore.

6. Ballavpur Wildlife Sanctuary (Deer Park)

Entry is free, but a valid government ID is required. A tranquil space where you can walk through wooded trails and spot spotted deer.

7. Srijani Shilpagram

An open-air craft village featuring traditional huts and crafts from eastern Indian states. Entry fee: ₹30. It’s a good place to understand local artistry. It is one of the important places in our one-day Shantiniketan tour.

8. Surul Rajbari

A quiet heritage complex featuring old temples and colonial architecture. The entry fee is ₹10, and while not very well known, it adds historical depth to the trip.

9. Amar Kutir

A handicraft centre and cooperative showcasing leather goods, kantha embroidery, and handloom products. Ideal for buying souvenirs made by local artisans.

10. Sonajhuri Forest and Saturday Haat

One of the highlights of the day was the Sonajhuri Forest, especially during the Saturday Haat. The market is set amidst forest trails, accompanied by Baul singers and Santhali dance performances. It offers a deeply local, authentic experience.

11. Kopai River

Nearby, we visited the Kopai River, often mentioned in Tagore’s poetry. The peaceful landscape is ideal for a short break before heading back.

12. Gitanjali Rail Museum

Located close to the station, the Gitanjali Rail Museum was closed in the morning but open by the evening. Entry fee: ₹30. The museum focuses on Tagore’s connection with Indian railways and features a replica of the Gitanjali Express.

Accommodation Options (If You Plan to Stay Overnight)

If you’re extending your trip:

Budget hotels near Bhubandanga start around ₹800 on weekdays and ₹1000 on weekends.
For a more immersive experience, resorts near Sonajhuri Forest are available, with prices starting at ₹3000 and above on weekends.
